Almost a Year
I cannot believe how fast time flies. I always felt like my last update was just a few months ago, but it was October of 2024! I apologize for my lack of communication.
There are lots of reasons for the delay. Some are legitimate and some are just excuses. If you remember, I was trying to move out of the city last year. I’m happy to say we did just that. We now live in the middle of nowhere, surround by about 70 acres of woods. It was an extremely difficult move, and after just a few weeks at the new place, there was some severe flooding damage that forced us to stay in a hotel for a month. After all the renovations, things finally started to get back to normal when my father passed away. It was pretty unexpected (motorcycle accident) and left me in a weird funk. I have a pretty rough relationship with my dad, so the entire situation was strange. We also lost my cat, who I had for 22 years.
None of that really matters though, because you’re not here for my personal drama, you’re here for information about Galahad, which I happen to have lots of!
What’s Going on With Galahad
I am still just as passionate as ever about Galahad, even more so now if I’m being honest. The first notes I got from the editor we rough to say the least. After reading them, I decided to take some time away from the script, so that I could come back to it in a less emotional state. This was in November, so I decided to enjoy the holidays and came back to Galahad in January. This worked out way better than I could of hoped.
I saw every issue that the editor had pointed out. It really all boiled down to my inexperience writing for comic books. I had some specific things I tried to do with perspectives and scene structure that just didn’t work. I spent my time away reading as many comics as I could, specifically ones by my favorite writers. I also read “The DC Comics Guide to Writing Comics” by Denny O'Neil, which really opened my eyes to a lot of things. As I said a long time ago, I know my story is great, I just need to make it a great comic!
And That’s exactly what I did. I did a full rewrite, fixing every issue with the first script. I can honestly say that the current version of Galahad #1 is the best thing I’ve ever written. I sent the new script to my editor, and he confirmed what I was feeling. I truly believe it’ll be one of the best indie comics ever made. The only problem is, I’m not going to be making it for awhile.
Putting Galahad on Hold
I’ve been studying crowdfunding for a long time, and the fact is, it’s just not as strong of a community as it used to be, especially for new creators. A lot of people won’t support you until you can prove you got what it takes to not only make a great comic, but also run a great campaign. We are also seeing a shift in the type of books people want to back, including myself.
I am getting fatigued by so many books that launch with the promise of a huge series or multiverse. Usually that means the first book is all introductions and build up, with payoffs being promised in future issues. This has become a huge pet peeve of mine, and even though that’s not what I’m doing with Galahad, I completely understand why people would be hesitant to believe that my book is different.
My gut is telling me that right now isn’t the time to launch Galahad. I need to do something first to show people I’m serious and that I have what it takes to do this. I am still so passionate about Galahad. I still wake up in the middle of the night thinking about it. I want it to get the attention and love it deserves, but that won’t happen if it’s my first project, and I honestly think getting my bearings first when it comes to crowdfunding and fulfilling is the way to go.
So What’s Next?
I’ve always heard that you should write the books you want to read. Well, right now, I want to read one-shots! Single issue comics with fun stories that have a beginning, middle, and end. No “next time on…” or “in the next issue….” Here is what I’ve been working on.
Three one-shot comic books. Each completely self contained. The first one is a high fantasy sci-fi adventure. It’s a tribute to the old school video games I used to play growing up, like Final Fantasy and Dragon Quest, with some darker elements from my days playing tabletop role-playing games. The script is really great, and is completely finished. I have already brought an artist on board, and I cannot wait for you to see what he has been working on. I will have a ton more info about it in the next newsletter, but for now I’d like to share some character sketches with you. I’m only sharing these here for now, so please keep them under your hat.

Thank You
Thank you so much for hanging in there with me. I know this is a “Galahad” newsletter, but each of these three books is a small step towards something truly amazing. I hope you stick around!
Next Time
The next newsletter, which will only be a few weeks away this time, will feature more info about my first one-shot, including info about the artist, and more artwork! See you then.
Give me six hours to chop down a tree and I will spend the first four sharpening the axe
